Urnia´s dance

Urnia Dantza Taldea was created in the 1970s in Larraga alongside the Rondalla and the groups of bagpipers and txistularis (traditional Basque flute players) with the aim of protecting and steering the youth away from the negative environments of the time on the streets and the consumption of alcohol in bars. The idea was proposed by Don Ángel, a newly arrived priest in the town. After years of outings, learning, and friendships among the members of all the groups, Don Ángel left the town and the groups disappeared.

Many years later, in 2009, Amaia, from Tafalla, revived the idea of re-establishing the dance group and proposed it as an extracurricular activity at the school. It was very well received, and eventually, the activity began to be held on Saturday mornings. Shortly after, an adult group was formed. Although the group from the 1970s performed in numerous locations in Navarre and beyond, the current group has also had the opportunity to go on outings and experience very positive moments.

Currently, Urnia Dantza Taldea has two groups: one for children, with 7 members, and one for youths, with 12. Rehearsals are on Saturday mornings, and the current teacher is Jaizkibel, who has been a member of the group since she started dancing in 2009. Urnia Dantza Taldea has a Board and participates with other associations, mainly with Larragako Txistulariak and Gaiteros Gaztelu, both from Larraga. It has also collaborated with and sought collaboration from other groups such as the Comparsa de Gigantes y Cabezudos, the Coral San Miguel Arcángel, and the Banda Alegría Raguesa, and hopes to collaborate with others like the Escuela de Jotas and any others willing to join.
